woman getting veneers in Oak CliffAre you completely satisfied with the way your smile looks? If the answer is no, you may be in the habit of hiding your smile with your lips or your hands, even if you aren’t aware of it. Even tiny chips or minor stains in your front teeth can severely hinder your self-esteem and confidence in your grin. When you don’t smile with confidence, it can make you appear unhappy or unapproachable, negatively impacting both your personal and professional life. The good news is that there is a treatment, known as veneers, that may be perfect for you. Keep reading to learn more about veneers in Oak Cliff and how we can enhance your smile with them quickly and easily.

What Are Veneers?

woman trying on veneersA veneer is a thin porcelain shell that fits over the front surface of your problem tooth to instantly correct virtually any aesthetic flaw that it may have, such as chips, cracks, or stubborn stains. Veneers can be used to repair one or two teeth, but they work best when your whole smile is revitalized by these restorations. You can think of veneers as tiny masks for your teeth, correcting multiple imperfections in just one treatment.

What Is the Process of Getting Veneers?

diagram of veneer going on toothAfter your initial consultation with your cosmetic dentist, Dr. Peramala, plan on making two appointments to receive your veneers. During the first visit, we’ll remove a tiny sliver of enamel (equal in thickness to a contact lens) from your affected teeth. Don’t worry; you’ll be numb for this portion of the procedure. Removing enamel is a crucial step in the process, as it will ensure that your veneers lay flat in the line of your smile.

Once your teeth have been sufficiently filed down, we’ll take impressions of those teeth. Then, those details will be sent to a dental lab, where a team of skilled ceramists will craft your veneers to our exact specifications. While your restorations are being created, we’ll affix you with temporary veneers to protect your teeth and let you get used to the way they feel in your mouth. A few weeks later, you’ll return to our office. We’ll replace your temporaries with your permanent veneers and send you on your way to enjoy your new and improved smile!

What Are the Benefits of Veneers?

Not only that, but gum tissue tolerates dental porcelain extremely well, meaning there should be no irritation. Porcelain also perfectly resembles natural tooth enamel in appearance and texture, as well as the way it reflects light. Lastly, dental porcelain is highly resistant to stains, so you can consume as much coffee or tea as you want without worrying about it discoloring your grin.

Am I a Candidate for Veneers?

Veneers may be right for you if your smile has any of the following imperfections:

  • Chipped or cracked teeth
  • Stains that don’t respond to whitening treatment
  • Slight gaps between teeth
  • Misshapen or stubby teeth

Since veneers are usually a purely cosmetic treatment, we ask that your mouth be infection-free before undergoing the procedure. If we detect cavities or instances of gum disease in your smile, we’ll have to address those issues before we can place veneers.

How Do I Care for My Veneers?

If you take proper care of your veneers, you can expect them to last for up to 15 years. Veneer maintenance involves regular brushing and flossing as well as attending dental checkups and cleanings at least every six months. Be sure to use a non-abrasive toothpaste with fluoride to strengthen your teeth against cavities. If you grind your teeth at night or play sports, ask us about crafting a custom mouthguard to protect against damage to your pearly whites. Finally, avoid chewing on inedible objects like ice or using your teeth as tools to open packaging, hold grocery bags, crack nuts, etc.
