How Dentists Straighten Teeth and Protect Your Appearance
Those with crooked teeth, misaligned bites or mild to moderate crowding will often hide their smile from friends and family. They may find brushing and flossing more difficult or experience jaw pain from time to time, even if they don’t grind or clench their teeth. The fact of the matter is misaligned teeth cause a whole host of issues, not just a smile you’re afraid to show off.
Dr. Peramala offers ClearCorrect, an orthodontic system that works to shift teeth without forcing you to significantly change your appearance or daily habits. Contact her office today to schedule a consultation and get started on your smile journey!
What is ClearCorrect?
Clear aligners are custom-made trays designed to represent specific stages of your orthodontic treatment. Traditionally, an arch wire and series of metal brackets bonded to teeth work to shift teeth. Instead of making regular visits to have your arch wire tightened by an orthodontist, you simply wear a pair of aligners for a set period of time, typically about two weeks. Once you finish wearing one pair, you move on to the next one and so on.
In the beginning, the aligners will feel tight against your teeth, but this is completely normal. After all, the goal is to shift not just the visible crown portions of teeth, but the underlying bone and tissue structure holding them in place. While you’ll still need to visit the dentist regularly every four to six months to ensure the aligners are shifting teeth as planned, people typically visit less often than they do for traditional braces.
What is the Treatment Process?
To start, you’ll have a ClearCorrect consultation with Dr. Peramala to confirm that the treatment is right for you. Once you confirm that you’re eligible, the dentist will begin the process of working with one of ClearCorrect’s many offsite labs. They will design a treatment plan from start to finish, then send it to the dentist so they can examine it more closely and give approval. After a couple weeks, the aligners will ship to the office so you can see how they fit.
For the most successful treatment, it is crucial that you wear the aligners for at least 22 hours per day. Without this compliance, you may experience hiccups in your treatment, which last anywhere from 6 to 18 months depending on the complexity of your case and your use.
Am I a Good Candidate?
More people are candidates for ClearCorrect than ever before, but clear aligners are not for everyone. If you have severe misalignment or extreme malocclusions (poor bites), it may be worthwhile to consider a more traditional option. However, if maintaining your appearance is important, it’s always a good idea to get a professional opinion first. If you have any of the following issues, contact our office at your earliest convenience. They include:
- Crowding teeth
- Gaps in front or neighboring teeth
- An overbite, underbite or crossbite
- Teeth growing in different directions
